Weapons of Mass Instruction

Last week as I went around the building working with students, looking over their work, I began to think about number grades.  Then, I thought about how I viewed getting back assignments as a student (and even as a doctoral student for that matter).  So here’s the two questions I asked myself:
  • What do you do when a test or assignment comes back from the teacher?
  • After that, what do you do next?
One: I look at the grade. What is it?
Two: I look for a friend’s grade.  What did you get?

As a young student the transaction ended there.  If it was good smile and move on.  If it was bad try and hide it.  Numbers tend to ruin any sense of development.  They are so final.  Feedback still remains the greatest weapon for growth.
