At the beginning of the school year our district agreed to a partnership with Marzano Academy. Each school has a team of teachers and administrators who have and will continue to attend training sessions throughout the school year to learn and understand the foundational concepts of becoming a Competency-Based School. What does this mean?
Back in 2017 (or so) our teachers began working on building stronger curriculum maps, alignment of standards, identifying power standards, etc. We have implemented COP's and take time on a regular basis to meet to better our practices. Over the past two years, specifically, we have worked to build competency in the standards and building proficiency scales for the transition to Standards Based Reporting. All of the work we have completed has been beneficial for the growth of our teachers and for our students. Now we are moving into the work where we use the proficiency scales to build quality assessments.
All of that being said, the work we are doing falls into and under the umbrella of the Marzano Academy Model. The work is not new...the partnership with Marzano is.
Currently, Dishman is the pilot school working directly with the Marzano Academy team of coaches. At the end of their work they will be the first Marzano Academy School in the state of Kentucky. The rest of our schools, administration, coaches, and teachers are currently and will continue to work along side them to better our competency of building proficiency scales and quality assessments. (Train the trainer model) So you will begin to hear the admin from both the school and the district level frequently use the Marzano name. We will also begin to use an online platform for course modules and a place for you, as teachers, to reflect and respond to the work we are doing. This information will be introduced to you at your next COP.
Overall the Marzano Academy provides a framework for schools to work in and under. Most everything within the framework we are already doing. What the Marzano team and the leadership team will be working on is creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for all the things we do here at PG. Think of it this way...a SOP is in place so that if something happens to the Principal or the Instructional Coach or a teacher...everyone knows what needs to be done and how it is to be done because there is an SOP in place. The SOP that you, the teacher, will be working on is the proficiency scale and assessments piece. So that if you move to a different grade or someone retires, the new teacher will be able to come into that grade or content area and know exactly what direction to work in.
So please know that we are working in a direction so that everything has a place, a purpose, and an understand of who does what.
