2019

In many cases we think we’re in competition with other people, but in reality we’re really in competition with ourselves.  It’s easier to externalize our goals so then it becomes about keeping up with someone else and not working on the hard task of making ourselves better.  Seth Godin writes about the top 5% which comes down more to will and want than talent in many cases.  For example, instead of focusing on being the best elementary school in Kentucky, focus on being the best elementary school for every one of our students.  By doing so the standards become specific, manageable.  But…and it’s a big but…this is accomplished more by internal goals than comparison goals.  Keeping up with the Joneses is a race to nowhere.

As we jump back into the next five months consider the following:

FOCUS —> Consider your growth goal and make it intentional.  This should be about a small slice not a broad swath.  For example, in looking at 3 Act Math, Number Talks, or manipulative success doesn’t mean this is every day, set a realistic target.  Failure isn't the issue, insincerity is  This should be underway but we’re all subject to drift.  We’ll talk more about this during the "how’s it going" meetings.

CONTRIBUTION —> Consider your impact and willingness to be honest but be helpful.  If your more than not the one dragging the conversation down then own it and improve upon it.  2019 has no time for unqualified resistance (meaning complaining for the sake of complaining).

There’s nothing shiny or ominous about this.  Grand plans are snazzy.  New workout clothes boost ambition for a little while.  All of this equates to little more than a sparkler on the 4th of July.  We’re all capable of shining way longer!
