The following is a re-post from March 15, 2015. In addition, I came across this powerful segment by CNN titled “9/11 Kids to Terrorists: ‘You Lose’”.
Immediately following the horrific attacks of 9/11 this country put aside all divisiveness. We mourned in unison as one country, a country of human beings bound together by the great fabric that is the United States of America. Yet, seventeen years later one is hard-pressed to see any sort of unity in this country. The wounds becoming scars and the callousness more severe. One place suspends the vitriol and serves as a stark reminder of who we can be as a nation…a prideful nation of heterogeneously grouped spirits with an infinite capacity for the amazing. Visit the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan and stand alongside thousands of complete strangers and instantaneously everyone becomes an empath. We stand, we cry, we relive and we remain in awe of the resiliency of New Yorkers in cooperation with the rest of the country’s giving nature.
In an idealist’s way of thinking, Pollyanna no question, what if we could recreate the daisy-chain of people that entered the base of those buildings to unearth any hope of human life, give dignity to those making the ultimate sacrifice, and hand one bucket at a time from one hand to the next for days and days on end…what if our communities could evenly remotely recreate that level of dedication to protecting the human spirit? Then again a former New Yorker made stake to this claim by penning Imagine.
