Uber to Space

July 8, 2011 marked the last Space Shuttle launch.  Since then, millionaires and billionaires have stepped in to create the next generation of space travel.  On February 6, 2018, SpaceX successfully launched Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket built to date.

Our students will be exposed to a new level of access in terms of space travel.  More than likely, they will live during a time that if you are wealthy enough, you can purchase a flight beyond Earth’s atmosphere.  This mind-blowing phenomena, in addition to self-driving semis and face recognizing phones, offers a great metaphor for progress.

Think of our classrooms as the rocket ship and we are the commander:
  • How do we fuel the rocket?
  • Where do we go and what uncharted territory do we explore?
  • What do we do if the rocket has a problem?
  • Are we good scientists by questioning assumptions?
  • How do we build a culture of optimism knowing the rocket is going to fail (a lot!)?
  • How do we celebrate the rocket will exceed initial expectations?
  • How do we make sure everyone brings their best every day because well--rockets are volatile?!
