America's Social & Economic Engine: Its People

Labor Day stems from a national recognition of the labor movement.  A day dedicated to America’s social and economic engine, its people.

You play a vital role in this engine as public educators.  The profession that creates all other professions.  In light of some disparaging comments about the profession in recent days, I cannot stress enough how special each of you are to this county, state, and nation. I may not be able to reflect this in increased pay (which I would), or increased benefits (which I would), but I can use words to remind you of how much you matter.

Every day in our school I witness the following:
  • hugs
  • hand holding
  • smiles
  • personal sacrifices
  • aha moments
  • patience
  • words of encouragement
  • words of expectation
  • long hours
  • parenting in place of a parent

This list is not nearly exhaustive.  We will continue to serve our students, but we also deserve public dignity.  The world needs public education as much now as ever and I thank you for being an integral part of our Nation’s labor movement.
